Daniel Sleator is an American computer scientist and professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He is best known for his work in data structures, algorithms, and computational complexity. He is the author of several books, including Data Structures and Their Algorithms, and has received numerous awards for his research. Sleator was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his B.S. in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1975. He then went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1977 and 1981, respectively. Sleator has been a professor at Carnegie Mellon since 1981, and is currently the William and Flora Hewlett Professor of Computer Science. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the ACM Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award in 1996, the ACM SIGACT Distinguished Service Prize in 2002, and the ACM SIGACT Knuth Prize in 2008. Sleator is married to fellow computer scientist Susanne Hambrusch, and they have two children. He is an avid runner and cyclist, and enjoys playing the piano.
