When the daily noon show Oras ng Ligaya made its debut in 1962, she became the most popular female celebrity in the Philippines. It was one of the pioneering shows of ABS-CBN.

In 1960, her dzRH program, "Tuloy ang Ligaya", with Lita Gutierrez and Oscar Obligacion was a phenomenon. Its success inspired Manila Broadcasting Company's big boss, Federico Elizalde, to transform it into a TV show. And that was how "The Big Show" was born on MBC's Channel 11 in 1961.

She is an actress, known for Ulila ng Bataan (1952), Buhay Pilipino (1952) and Tang-tarang-tang (1962).

She joined showbiz due to the prodding of her father, Olive La Torre, a known director who was credited for having resurrected Sampaguita Pictures via the historic Roberta (1951).

Tagged as the Queen of Kundiman (traditional love songs), she recorded around 400 singles from 1950 to 1970s.

Started stage theater acting at age 9. By 1948, she joined in the Manila Grand Opera House the then biggest name in the industry like Bayani Casimiro and Katy de la Cruz. Also during the Japanese occupation, Sylvia was a staple in stage shows at the Life Theater, where she performed with Pugo and Togo, Tony Santos and Rogelio de la Rosa. Her contemporaries as child actors were Leroy Salvador and Chiquito.

At age seven, she became a certified film star via Ang maestra (1941).

At age 5, she was already starting joining singing contests in Manila in 1938. In her first competition joined, she emerged as the champion at the Savoy Theater in downtown Manila. Her winning piece was the kundiman "Ako ay Bulaklak ng Kawangis.".
